The first United Brethren Church of Mt. Airy was organized in June 1845. It was incorporated as the "Jessup United Brethren Church," and was located on Giffin Pike, now known as Jessup Road, near Vogel Road. This church was destroyed by a tornado in 1866.
The congregation was not financially able to rebuild; however, their spiritual ties remained and the congregation met on a regular basis in various locations throughout the community.
On January 9, 1891, the Reverend F.H. Bohn formed the present organization which was named the United Brethren in Christ Church. The church received its official charter on April 29, 1891. The congregation immediately began making plans to build a church on the present site. The cornerstone was laid on August 2, 1891 and the church as it now stands was completed in November of 1891.
The original congregation consisted of 21 members. After the establishment of the church they began forming organizations such as the Sunday School and Choir. A scout troop was formed in 1920, a men's organization formed in the '30's, the senior Christian Endeavor Society formed in 1927 and the Women's Missionary Society formed in 1932.
The adjacent parsonage was finished in 1952 and the Education Building was completed in 1960.
In 1946, the church of the United Brethren in Christ merged with the Evangelical church. The congregation became the Mt. Airy E.U.B Community Church. In 1968, when the Methodist Church united with the Evangelical United Brethren, the congregation took the present name of The Mt. Airy United Methodist Church.
Today, Mt. Airy United Methodist Church is a small, vital congregation with a strong commitment to education, nurturing its members, and engaging in outreach to the community. Visitors are not only welcomed, but invited into the fellowship. |
